How do you remove window tinting?

Wow, I never looked at the original post date, until I saw Tonys comment, 10 years, doesn't seem that long. PJ

Thought I was losing it for sure when I saw that Tony commented. Good thing I continued to read. I'm feeling so much better now.

Hi All,
Ignoring how old this Q is I'll answer it in case someone comes across it in a search.
THE way to remove window tinting is with a clothes steamer. That's right, a clothes steamer, a single edge razor blade, "Goof-Off" to clean the remaining residue, ammonia window cleaner and PATIENCE.

Just steam it up and start peeling the tint away. I worked in sections by scoring a line with the blade from top to bottom about 3 inches wide and then steaming that section and peeling it away. You'll need to keep steaming as you work down.

If the remaining glue won't steam off then use a rag with some Goof-Off on it to wipe it off. Then clean the glass with an ammonia window cleaner and you're done.

Don't push too hard with the blade or you will score the glass.

I bought the Sunbeam steamer at Walmart. I bought that one because it stands upright on its base when not in use. Other brands would probably work too.
There are many videos of this on Facebook and it does work a treat.
Steams up! Time to go.
Joel

That kind of weirded me out seeing Tony’s post
Mis that guy...

Excellent advice - Ryan I didn't welcome you at the introductions thread - so welcome! As you meander around the site, check the dates of the posts. Your advice is helpful and relevant but the thread itself and the last post is almost 10 years old.

cheers
JP

Ryan has gone bye bye. I had a feeling when, on the registration form, where it asks "What British car do you own. If none state reason for joining." He put "Interested". Then in New members he just posts "hello" and his second post is a reply to a 10 year old thread with a link to some window tinting business.

Good bye Ryan, hope you enjoyed your short tenure here.

I was already wondering boss - guess some of your sleuthing spidey sense is starting to rub off.

We're able to stop 95% of these guys before they ever make it onto the forum, but every now and then one slips through.

There were several other posters from 10 years ago that i haven't see around in quite awhile.

I haven's seen Vince post in quite a while, I guess he's still around. PJ

I use dishwashing soap mix in spray bottle and plastic razor blades. Soak the egdes, peel back, spray occasionally. Usually comes right off in whole pieces, if you are patient enough to spray and pull slowly. Then go back over window and clean and use the plastic razor, then window cleaner. Done this on quite a few cars. Did a full window van in 2 hrs.

As far as window tint, I had a Porsche 924 I removed the window tint on. A hair dryer and heat directly applied to where I was removing worked great. With a little finesse most came off pretty much as one big sheet. Cleaned up what little residue was left with Windex.

Well, the spammer we had did one cool thing - resurrected a thread with Tony in it from 10 years ago!

And I bet Tony's up there looking down and laughing about it!

Wonder if there's any MGs up there running around? If Tony has his way there is! :encouragement:

Thanks for the ping Basil. I've been busy, and nearly every day working on MGs. So many other things going on as well. Wish I had the time to pop pin regularly but never have enough time.

Geez, Vince! Where ya been?!? :savewave:

Hey Doc! Working on a 67 for 2 years and a Cobra replica for a year. That a full time job, 3 kids, the Mrs and such keep me swamped. I'll have to look a bit and get a feel for the forum again. Looks a lot different. Need to figure posting pics again so I can show some of my work.

A brick and a trip to the glass shop.
