Why can't I throw anything away? AKA where is it when I need it?!

I take a small tupperware bax to do the house job - plumbing/ electrical etc - and then just set it down on the workbench.

Definitely a no-no here. I was "conditioned" from youth that tools are to be where you know they are when you need 'em. "A place for everything and everything in its place". The lesson took on particular import when as a young teen I was learning the craft of photography. In a darkroom you need to know where everything is without being able to see. Thus all things go in a particular space. If you'll pardon the pun; total darkness was an eye-opener. :smirk:

When I learned to weld, I started a bucket of leftover metal "that I might need someday". Now that pile is about 5 buckets and I do pull metal out of the pile at times, but it is really in the way. I put tools away after a job is finished. IE: if the job is still in progress, the tools are still there, sometimes lost on the floor or wherever I set them down.
I was helping my daughter in cabinet installation. There were 4 of us working and we had 4 tape measures. But we all set them down and then went over to someone else and took one that was unguarded. What circus.

My tool box is very nicely organized; my collection of parts and fasteners mostly resides in random mayonnaise jars, coffee, cans, etc. and these in turn are shoved into any space I can find for them.

I had always been plagued with a too-small tool box and not enough cabinets to hide stuff away. Finally, now that I'm retired, I bought a decent sized tool chest and some Gladiator Cabinets. I also re-purposed a few of my old kitchen cabinets for the garage when I remodeled the kitchen. Now, for the first time in my adult life, I have a place for everything and so far have been doing good keeping everything it it's place.

Everything works a bit slower and I forget where I put stuff but when I go to a funeral I go home afterwards the alternative would be staying at the grave yard. I have too much left to do to stay there yet.
Keep looking at the Grass from the top side.

Nice to know that husband is in good company. Unfortunately he has a wife that shares his interest but... she is a master organizer who keeps him relatively organized in spite of that rolling eyes look he has mastered. Last major battle was the attic. Wife doesn’t like climbing so when she had no choice but to attempt to find a much needed ice chest she was in shock at the accumulation of stuff. Anger won over and it took three transfer station runs and several days of supervised sorting to see the open space again. We have lots of stuff that I am sure we will never use. Who needs the refill bottles to a humidifier that is no longer made? The stuff however is organized and even husband Doug likes the organization. At least that is what he says. I suspect he just doesn’t want to rock the boat. Organization is an ongoing battle and so far we are at least holding our own. It’s an ongoing project.

I suspect you and SWMBO would have much (or perhaps little) to talk about - there are many reasons she is amazing but, her ability to keep (and encourage the keeping of) a simple and clean and orderly space is astounding - and benefits me as I truly do feel less stress with less stuff. Ironically the clean gene has gone to my son but most assuredly not my daughter.

Holy cow Rick! Tell me that is not your garage, just where you happened to find that Healey.

A factory 100M you say, that would have been a heck of a barn find or, in this case, a rubbish heap find.

I frequent another forum - based in the UK - and I am amazed at how much junk there is in many of the photos posted - one in particular - if that yard were next to me classic cars or not I would be calling the police!
