Took the (incomplete) paperwork in to VA DMV to get it registered.
I thought that I was saving money by not completing it.
Was told that I can't register a vehicle until I get a VA driver's license,
& to get a driver's license,I have to have proof of residency.The truck registration
expires on Wed.,plus the guy who sold it to me signed on the wrong line,And I don't
get an apartment until tomorrow.
I debated about forging the seller's signature,but decided that It'd be best
to "Do the right thing",& send it to him to sign.I literally lost sleep over this,as I'm
dealing with a government agency,& don't need any more problems.
But the good news is that it passed the state inspection,after failing the first-
time,due to worn out ball joints.That only cost me $1200!
 
Doug - what vehicle were you registering?

I had a similar experience here in Connecticut, registering my 1953 MG. DMV clerk looked at the Ontario registration form and said it was invalid. "There's no such thing as a twentieth month!"

Ontario date was 20/10/2016.

I casually mentioned that Canada often uses a date format of DD/MM/YYYY.

Clerk glared at me, then the glare slowly changed to red face embarrassment.

Create a government department and they dream up ways to make life more and more complicated. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Military and some foreign countries also use that form of date. Caused me no end of worry when a bank payout showed "non-existent" payment dates in a trust. Sleepless nights until I found out they had an Indian clerk handling the account for two months.
 
2 trips to the DMV so far to try to register the new project. My wife always goes, they are nicer to her. She made a wrong comment about the car being in boxes, so the clerk said they could not register the car till it is driven to the DMV for inspection. IE: spend all the money on the car , then maybe we will let you register it.
I am going to call the VIN verifier that came to my house for the last car. Perhaps he has a way around this mess.

No.... I mean duh,of course it is a 20th month - remember, up here we use the metric system. :rolleyes:
 
Sorry to learn you're having problems, Doug. A 'Catch-22' circumstance!

Attempting to comply with all the requirements can be beyond frustrating, honest folk don't want to be scofflaws. It isn't always the rules, rather an individual bureaucrat's inability (or unwillingness) to interpret and solve issues falling somewhere along the edges of those rules. Too many unsympathetic drones! Sometimes it can be of advantage to request supervisory intervention. Sometimes, not. A 'sticky wicket' in any case.
 
Wife just got a letter from Spain. It was a speeding ticket - 103k in an 80K zone. Daughter was driving. "Do not pay by check" in English. Avis charged her $46 to rat her out to the authorities. Ticket is in Basque and Spanish. 100 Euro fine but if paid by 11/9, only 50 euros. Unpleasant souvenir. Radar. When speed limit changes, you have to be doing limit when you hit the sign. Known to the locals apparently.
 
I received a ticket two weeks after returning from Auckland, NZ. It was for "being a a left hand lane for more than 500 meters before turning". Who knew?
Avis tried changing me $50 to mail me the citation but they rescinded the fee.

I have just received the bill for the fine from the car rental company, I did not have to do anything more. (And did not have the chance to contest, or just ignore the fine.) In Europe, the philosophy is, the car owner is responsible for any fines, i.e. if the car is caught speeding the owner should know who was driving. Not sure I agree with this, but it takes the "human factor" out of it; middle aged drivers of brown sedans are just as likely to get a ticket as a 16 year old driving a red sports car.
 
This is what happens when the Government is allowed to run things.
 
Finally got internet again.
Went to DMV (again!),& was told that I need my CA license,plus
TWO other forms of Gov't ID.Social Security card,& a Birth Cetificate.
I have no idea where my SS card is,& my Wife is sending the
birth certificate to me.
I went to the SS office,& after showing my CA license,was told
that I should have a new card within two weeks.I was only there for
about 10 minutes.
What I don't understand is,why is it so hard for me to get a VA-
license ? I see that if you don't speak English,they will provide a free
interpteter for you.How can those people have two proper forms of ID?
 
Tried to pay the Basque ticket today but got lost on the website. It was different than what was printed on English on the back of the notice. I'm trying to be good, but...and the fine goes up to 100 euros after 11/9.

I'm trying to get the '96 Ford F150 registered.
I'm driving the GT,as the truck's license expires tonight.

I think illegals have an easier time doing this.
 
Doug maybe you can just try to fake an accent and claim to be illegal. That should make it easy.
