Nothing can compare to the auto shops around Willets Point, Queens, NY. It's right by Citi Field. The auto shops in this area are right out of a third-world country. Here's one of the "upscale" establishments...

There was a link to Cuban outdoor mechanics as well. all amazing! I am part of another forum mostly based in the UK and it is amazing to me how many guys are doing significant work on their cars - outside - even on the road - in UK weather - or in garages the size of shoeboxes. Interestingly, we get the Amazing Race Canada and last season or so they found themselves in Cuba for part of it - and their "task" was to make bushings out of a piece of rubber - amazing!

Incidentally in the Hong Kong photos about 2/3 - 3/4 down there is what appears to be a british car in a garage - (Not the MGBGT!) old style fenders and beehive signals - don't think it is a jag or a morgan, but, maybe? any ideas?
 
Newport Beach (LA area) used to be like that in the '70's.
A lot of cool stuff in shops along the main road.
 
Most modern (ie post 1970) homes in the UK the garage is somewhere to store garden eqipment. You can't get out of the car when its in the garage. My first landlord way back when had a Ford Granada. When he went away for a few weeks he would garage his car but he had to climb out of the sunroof, not enough room to open the doors and the car would be the only thing in the garage.

Certainly seems that way - and it looks like people are renting council garages - often some distance away - as well.
