She was running hotter than she should at sustained speed over long distances. Would get to over 95°C and not come lower unless I stopped for some time. Had flushed the system, changed thermostat and water pump, had to auger out the small bleed hole in the t'stat housing, too. Still had the issue. Did a radiator R&R Wednesday before Christmas, TA-DA!!

...but...

Now after the Christmas run to Miami and back, and a start to Sarasota yesterday, a 'funny' clicking from the right rear at speed. Had to abort the mission. Now she will get new half-shafts for New Year.

Old cars. *sheesh*

Pretty sure page 1428 of the Mercedes manual states augering bleed holes will adversely affect the read axle.

Could it be that Mercedes altered the software to trigger a half-shaft failure when you cleaned the hole?
I've heard that sort of scenario is possible in German cars

Yeah, I didn't read that far ahead. She's only got 250K miles on those axles, you'd think they'd last more than thirty years.

Fortunately she's software free. Greg's assessment may be closer to truth in that after the bleed hole was cleared and radiator replaced, I may have been a bit too liberal with the loud pedal... ran her a bit over the normal speeds she's used to. :smirk:

This made me spit out my beer.

For a Florida resident, isn't that about 18 MPH?

That's only on secondary roads. On the Interstates if you ain't goin' eighty, you're a traffic cone down here.

(Seriously, weren't you planning to sell Diesela?)

Not in the near future, Tom. I need her going until I get an Alfa engine put together for my next daily driver. Too many projects and clients keep buggin' me to fix their stuff! :smirk:

Experiences may vary! On my one visit to Florida about five years ago I was amazed by how quiet most of the roads were compared to the UK. We spent three weeks following the coast around from the Space Centre all the way around to Sanibel Island.

I'm guessing you did the driving between 3pm and 6pm. Between those hours all the locals are off the road for the "early bird specials" in Florida.

True, and when you are on holiday and not in a hurry you don't so much notice things running slow. The only time we noticed traffic particularly was in Miami during the day. We were there in August.

The roads empty out at night during the Winter. Old timers don't - or can't - drive at night. If you're a DAN (drives at night), you can get all the women you want.

i just paid the yearly personal property taxes on my wife's '15 Avalon & my '10 Ram ....$1100.+.

compared to the TR3's $30.
I vote for more repairs & less tax.

Doc yer too old to be on the freeways. Get back on the back roads and petal harder.

It's Diesela who's apparently too old, Dar. But we're gonna fix that. And soon... but grunt as hard as I may, no new petals have grown for over a decade now. :smirk:

Fellow on one of the other forums I frequent has a '98 MB Diesel wagon - former taxi cab - has 983,000 km.
