My earliest memories are smells. When I was very small and ice cream van would come down our cul-de-sac. The van was a diesel. Hardly anyone down our road had cars and those that were there were all petrol. So that diesel smell was very different to anything else I encountered at the time. Now whenever I smell diesel exaust fumes I instantly think of ice cream.

...'course, the smell of diesel fuel burning sends me to remembering model trains as a kid, sooo...

Same for me on smells. Being in Japan from 59 to 63. The smell of the open air markets in the town just outside the base we were at.
 
That's when hanging your stockings were really your stockings. Memory jogged and smiling.
