Facebook question

With family scattereed across the continent it (FB) works to keep in touch. That's about it. The political stuff is simple amusement.
 
I guess that's what puzzles me. If I can keep in touch with emails and photo/video sharing, I don't see the value of adding something as cumbersome and "enveloping" as the newer gizmos (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, etc.). I see they're fun - but how do they improve on emails (group emails, email lists, etc.).

I think it's because we're not 18 and wanting to be famous and in front of the entire world, not just friend and family. Why the need to post photos and stories that most if us "more seasoned" travelers on this earth would consider best forgotten...
