I can think of at least one grand daughter that might just fit that scenario......so I sent this to their mother.......
 
I have no memory of this, but I'm told that when I was about 3 yo, I went missing one day. Mom and my sisters were panicked. Dad was away with the Army. This was in a small town in WVa and the police and half the neighborhood were out combing the woods for me.

I had somehow crawled behind the couch and fallen asleep.

My mother has a similar story as a child - they closed off part of house in winter - her sisters were making fun of her so she went into that half and fell asleep
 
We had the same thing here - a 3 year old girl was reported missing.
Had the Sheriff's department,& the Fire department looking for here.
They found her in a closet (alive).
