It looks like the pushrod tubes have some kind of sealer on them top and bottom. Am I seeing that correctly?

Hard to tell but I think it's just the preservative coating that's smeared over everything -- except the push rod tubes. Maybe they were installed after the iron was machined and coated. But there is a definite line around the tubes so it's very possible that a sealer was applied after the tube were installed.

That is the aluminum plug with all the small square punch marks on it, right? Mine was swiss cheese so those punches were not so easy to observe.

OK, now I see that what I was looking at top and bottom was just a reflection of the tube in the black paint. The reason I asked is my pushrod tubes leak oil and I can't see any way to prevent it. Not a huge leak, just enough to make the side of the block shinny. Thanks for explaining what you saw.

I see that the core plug on the back of the head appears to be a cup style -- I have always used a Welch Plug there (convex & hammer flat).

Joe,
I had a chance to unpack it and look closer at the tubes. Here's what we found:
The preservative is all over the head except on the tubes bit I did notice a drip or two inside a couple of the tubes. This leads me to believe that the tubes are installed just after the preservative was applied(liberally) to the head, while the preservative was still runny which dripped into a couple tubes. We looked very closely and are certain that no other sealer was used. But the preservative itself might have sealed the tubes some what.

Hi Peter;

Thanks for describing what you show in the pictures, It's a big help.

Joe

Joe,

You are quite welcome. I find it most interesting to see something original and untouched and answering "those" questions we have all had about what should be. I am not a purist by any stretch but do like to have answers to my Qs.

I also noticed that there is evidence of a slight cleaning up around the inside of ports near the manifold that was likely done after casting to smooth them out. Looks like a larger burr type swirl.

Also the passenger rear corner has some surface grinding where I suspect the rough casting was poured, then ground smooth *after* the coating was applied, maybe caught during a final inspection. I verified my old heads had similar grinding marks, just covered with paint. Interesting this wasn't done before machining.

Anyway, glad to be of help!

Peter
