My friends have a cabin down in Sugar Grove. I never knew about the "Radio Quiet Zone". I used to think it was fun to hit the scan button on the FM radio in my car and just watch it cycle endlessly. I did stay on the base one time when they got married and we stayed in the guest cabins on the base. It's amazingly remote - you take Route 33 out of Harrisonburg and go over the mountain. The nearest "big" town with a grocery store is Franklin, some 30 minutes or so away.

Saw some interviews with folks who live in the civilian area closest to the radio telescope.
The coolest part was when they asked local teenagers how they felt about not being able to ever use their cell phones at home. They were perfectly happy with it. Didn't mind it a bit. Some even said they enjoyed disconnecting most of the time.
