Just (kind of) got filled in some early family history tonight...

There a discussion/talk at our church tonight (don't worry this won't be "religious"), after it was over I talked to an older lady who had also been there, just a little chit chat... Turns out that she used to attend the church my parents met at in 1961... I prodded a little at this point... She was young at the time... Her mom knew my mom and she remembered our family name, it is quite unique after all...

And there has been some mystery to me as to why the church itself folded in 1968, according to some records I've found, without getting into the explanation she explained to me basically what happened at that time period... The kind of information you really only get from firsthand knowledge...

And I almost didn't go to the talk, definitely worth going!

Also met some other interesting people as well...

You never know who you're going to run into! A couple years ago my sister hosted a dinner following the funeral of her husband (my BIL) at Arlington National Cemetery. The Dinner was at a restaurant that was one of BIL's favorites. Mid-way through the dinner, my sister called me over to a table to meet one of her neighbors. We got to talking and come to find out we were both computer maintenance technicians on the NORAD SAGE Air Defense Computer system. Furthermore, we were both stationed at the 24th NORAD Region, Great Falls, Montana, at the same time frame! We both only vaguely remembered each other as we were on different crews and thus only interacted during crew change-overs. It was amazing that this guy I used to work with is now a neighbor to my sister in Anne Arundel, MD. What are the odds?

Ain't that the truth. First job out of college I moved from mid Ohio to Los Angeles. The lady put in charge of showing me the ropes that first day asked where I was from. Figuring it was 2600 miles away I just said Ohio. More specific was the response. Central Ohio, more specific please. So I gave the small town name. She then asked if I knew this older gentleman who lived there. Turned out to be her uncle and when she was a teen had spent several of her summers with him and his family. So drive 2600 mile and the first person I get to know not only knew where it was I came from, but had family there.

James,

so why did the church fold in 1968, if you don't mind me asking?

Basically a bad pastor around the mid 1960's, she didn't say specifically but people likely just left and it couldn't keep going... The building is still there, at one time it was a wedding shop, more recently it has been a bike/ski shop, although that store is closing at the end of March with the owner retiring...

On the small world theme,

A good few years ago I started a new job. As I was being introduced to my new collegues one lady said "Oh Hello, I've got your picture on my wall"! I hadn't a clue who she was but an explanation was forthcoming. When I was fourteen I attended a cousins wedding and my new collegue was her bridesmaid. She had a picture of bride, groom and family on her wall. She recognised me from that some 20 years later!

I lived in Dallas in the late 60's early 70's.
There was a quaint little downtown church that struggled to keep it's doors open. Finally it was sold and turned into a bar called "the Old Church." it thrived for many a year.
Until the owner got in hot water for not paying taxes. Rumor was, he was still claiming non-profit, tax free church status. The Lord works in mysterious ways.

We were living on the East coast at the time and we took a trip out West and were at the Grand Canyon. After spending a whole day there, we decided to end the day with a nice dinner and crash. When we reached the car, there was a business card behind the wiper from an Attorney from back East. Not thinking I just put it in my pocket. Later that night my wife thought she recognized the name, with her being a Real-estate broker for over 25 years at the time, here it was an attorney she had a case with many years earlier, calling him, he said he just recognised the tag on the car being from the East and just thought he'd say hello. What's the chances of that! Never had that happen afterwards. PJ

My daughter went skiing in Colorado a few weeks ago.
Having breakfast in a Denny's restaurant in Dillon Colorado, she looks over and is shocked to see our next door neighbor in the booth across from her.

I just played golf with a guy that used to sell carpet to my parents business. During the round, he started asking about where I was from,(500 miles away) and then he got into a business he used to call on in that town. Knew my parents, had them build a custom cabinet for his wife.
Amazing how a chance encounter brings back memories.
