That's too bad, I enjoyed his writing.

I recall him visiting my "area" when I was stationed at Ft. Meade. Certain speculative aspects of his writing were making certain people uncomfortable, so they decided to bring him in and show him certain operations. The explanation to us was; by showing him this/that he would be legally bound to not include any aspect small/large, part/whole, fiction/fact in his writing, unless approved...

Sad. He changed the rules of the game when it came to writing fiction with a meticulousness to detail that hadn't been seen before. As a resident of Maryland, a lot of his books were tied into Maryland or had Maryland references (the car chase in Patriot Games along US 50 heading towards Annapolis comes to mind), and the books were always better than the movie adaptations.

Complex stories are always hard to bring to the screen, too much detail to convey in two hours. I liked The Hunt for Red October film, but the book is better. And his later 700-800 page books could never be made into movies without losing what made them good.

Yes,RIP. Had the opportunity to meet him when my RE broker listed his condo. AIR there was a "contentious" divorce going on at the time. Like SaxMan, and others in MD, the local touch always made the books more fun.
