For those of you who remember, last April we had a rather large tree land on our house. When they removed the tree we saved a 10 foot section of the trunk so my father could use it to make Windsor chairs. This weekend, we actually began splitting it up into sections using wedges and BIG hammers! THought you might find this interesting....

Well, since the chairs are made entirely using hand tools, don't hold your breath. It took us three months to begin splitting the log. I was amazed however how this could be done with a little brute force and a wedge. I plan to use the pics in my classroom this year when I teach the part on "simple tools" Too bad I couldn't save a section for my students to split.
(Should I be concerned that I spent the day in 105 degree heat hand splitting a log a found it amazing)
