What was your weird problem today?

I had the weirdest problem today!

So, I had my starter rebuilt because it was having trouble cranking. Turns out the shaft was BENT (That's not the weird part) so it definitely needed a rebuild.

Upon reinstallation, the car was still having trouble cranking over. Scratching my head, I had the battery checked - it was OK. I checked all the cables and connections - all OK!

I walked away for a day to think about it, and I came back and tried it again. I pressed the starter solenoid and what happens?

THE CARB LINKAGE STARTS SMOKING! I had to rub my eyes and try again...yep...it happ

The car is looking for ground!!! I thought "THE GROUND STRAP FOR THE ENGINE!" I checked it and voila, not a good connection! Moved it to a better place and everything's fine.

What was your weird problem today?

Mine was a classic one: wipers on my Herald suddenly stopped during a very hard rain! (Gee, they never seem to fail when it's sunny out.... ) One side was parked rather further down than usual, so I removed that arm, after which the arm on the driver's side (thank goodness) began to move again, but only for a short time, after which it stopped again. I think the problem is still on the passenger side, though. I'd replaced the wheel box on that side last year, and I think something jumped out of place there. It's a PITA to deal with that, since I pretty much have to drop the dashboard to gain access! :madder:

I keep forgetting that the Bugeye doesn't have an auto cancel turn signal so everyone thinking I'm always going to turn left for a couple of miles, until they think I'm going to turn right for a couple of miles.

(doesn't really count I know, but still amusing that I'm too much of a dolt to have figured this out already)

I've fixed a lotta things on my MG, including a recent brake system overhaul, front suspension, and other challenging stuff on any number of LBCs.

But one of the most frustrating jobs I've done in awhile is getting the bonnet correctly aligned, with all the gaps just right. It's like juggling and dancing at the same time. Get one gap right, then another is off.

After about 6 hours of fiddling with it over 2-3 days, I finally got it *almost* right. Holy cow, I'm not touching that thing ever again!

Easy = hard? :crazyeyes: :cryin:

Our GT6 guards the driveway. My wife says it's too hot to drive it at the present time.

My weird problem was the starter motor on the Spitfire. It would run, but only at low speed. While troubleshooting it, it stopped working all-together. Then I noticed the motor end cap with the brushes was loose. After tightening that up and a few whacks with a lead hammer the starter worked again. However, I still plan to pull the motor on Sunday and give it a more thorough exam.

My weird one deals with my thermostat. The car has run on the cool side for years. I just let it be. Last weekend it suddenly started running at tempr os slighjtly above. Wondering what changed, I decided to pull the thermostat. I had to give a slight tap with a rubber mallet to loosen it. I pulled it out and it came with outthe shield. Investigation found the shield securely attached to the inside of the housing from calcification. Clearly it had not been operating as it should have for some time. I believe that the thermostat was stuck in the full open all the time, and then broke loose enough from the shield to function a bit more normally. The really weired thing is I also found a sizeable metal clump inside the housing. I'm pretty sure it is the remains of part of a previous temp sensor. Possible that came into play as well.
Really glad I investigated, but WOW are those shielded thermostats expensive.

Thought I could get away with replacing the axles in my 63 Spit with a set from a 76. Didnt know the axles were longer or the axle stubs were different. Now I will be replacing the axles, spring and center chunk.

Note that the u-joints are the same, so you could reuse the u-joint flanges from your old axles, with new u-joints presumably, on the longer axles. That'll save you changing out the differential ('cause if you do that, you'll also have to change the u-joint flange on the propeller shaft). I don't know many folks who've used longer axles with the older fixed spring, but I don't see why it shouldn't work. Oh, if you keep those longer axles on the car, you'll need body mount brackets and radius rods from the '76!

...or you could just stay with the original setup.

OK, this was a really weird experience for me, I went to install my Pertronix on the TR250 today, I had been putting it off cause everything was working well so don't mess with it right?

Anyway I had some free time today, so decided to install the thing. Briefly read the instructions, pulled the points etc. off, screwed on the pertronix, doubled checked wiring so I don't fry anything, mess with the sensor thingy a little to get it seated right, buckle it back up.

OK, here is the weird part, starts right up, runs smooth, idles at the same speed as before, hook up the timing light, all good, and a nice steady timing mark, less jiggle.

And it gets weirder still, I then gapped the plugs out from .025" to .028" went for a long drive and nothing happened, the car just ran well.

This is weird because I am used to at least one or two hiccups caused by either the parts or the installer (me) before it all works right!
