I thought it worthy of a post for those who have never removed and re-installed an overdrive from the transmission. I discovered that after removing the 8 nuts that secure the adaptor plate to the transmission that the overdrive separated quite easily, however, when reversing this procedure it isn't so easy. The manual states to put the transmission in top gear and by slowly turning the input shaft the overdrive will engage (I found this to be correct) however, the pump plunger prevents the overdrive from engaging completely and you'll find a 1/2 inch gap between the transmission and the overdrive. To overcome this you MUST locate the pump plunger cam lobe that slides on the shaft at it's lowest point or it will not slide home. It took me several attempts at this to get it just right. There is no other way (that I can see) that you could depress the plunger inside the overdrive and still slide the overdrive onto the transmission. Once the camlobe is at its lowest point it will just clear the roller at the top of the plunger allowing the overdrive to match up to the transmission. I hope this helps others. It'll become all too clear once you've done it a couple of times.
