Removing Head with Smog Equipment

I have a 1973 MG Midget 1275. At startup it looks like a steam engine, with the amount of white smoke that comes out.
So I started to removed the head today to put in a new head gasket (Payen) After reading the Haynes manual, I didn't notice anything about the smog equipment. Does this come off with the head, or do I want to get this removed before removing the head.
Thanks,
Allan

I don't think it makes much difference one way or the other. I I were doing it, I'd remove the air tubes (if that's what they're called) along with the head, since I think it would be easier, but whatever is easiest for you is probably OK. I might be missing something, but I have a hard time thinking of any consideration that isn't obvious.

On the other hand, you may have to remove the air stuff anyway, so the head can be checked for flatness, which is a good thing to do if you've blown a head gasket. (Sorry, I mean, if your CAR has blown a head gasket....)

You'll need to block the air Injector Ports on the intake manifold if you are planning on permanently removing the smog pump. All depends on whether you need to pass emission standards in PA any more.Someone will chime in with the proper size of bolts / allen head screws/bolts that are needed. Might need a new belt with air pump removed.

Have most people moved the smog equipment on their vehicles that have a 1275. I work at PennDOT, so I can find out the legal side of things, just never thought of it.
I do have a spare smog head, so I can change over to it and I know that it is good in case there was any damage to the head.
Thanks,
Allan

Most of the air injector pumps siezed up years ago. Unless you are in CA, most folks have removed. Pretty simple to do. Trevor has the info on the 4 bolts needed to plug the ports on the intake manifold. Also, what type of Payen Head Gasket did you get. I think Hap recommended the composite type last week rather than the copper head gaskets.

Jim,
Yep I got the composite head as I read Hap's posting also.
I am going to put in my spare head so I can get this one checked before it goes back in. I was going to get the other one ported and worked, but I think that will wait to see if this head is ok.

Thanks,
Allan

Definitely 7/16-20.

Just for the record, if the car is 1975 or earlier, it does not need to be smog-checked in California and you don't need to preserve smog equipment.

It is 1965 in Arizona unless you have collector insurance. There is no emission testing for collector cars.
