I own a Hummer H3, never had much trouble with it over the years but always take it to the deal for the "free" inspection. Well since it was 2 months over due I took it down this morning, right in, great meeting the service manager right away, and in the garage it goes.
We will take a small pause in the inspection story here to talk what I did not see at the Hummer/Saab/Pontiac/GMC dealer. Mainly... costomers. I spent over an hour there and not one, not a single one walked in. It was scarey. Even if I had not know what not was like at the dealer over the past two years (a mid level volumn dealer)it would have been easy to see no one is buying. The dealer has cut back drastically on his stock. Last year right after the G8 came out they had 10 there with a "market cost adjustment" of an extra $5000 added to the sticker. Today they had 3 and had $3000 off GM employee price advertised on the wondow. wow!
Back to the inspection, it went in and the service tech came out with $880 to have it pass inspection. It started with the fact i needed new rotors because "the out side edge of the rotors are rusty ", that was $440. The brakes were 8/32 front and rear. ($200 for brakes). Next was the fact that my "passenger side wiper was not making contact with entire window" and they suggest a new wiper arm and wiper blades ($200). Additionally I needed a new tail light bulb ($28 dollars, $2 for the bulb and $26 for labor).
After talking to the service manager I was told the rusty outer edge of the rotors does not prevent the truck's inspection (I am glad, I would hate to have to start to wire brush the lips of my rotors to keep them clean), the brakes were actually above the requirement, and the wiper, inspite of his initial disagreement, did not prevent the inspection. I suggested he break out the inspection book to check the wiper fault. He began to back track and tell me how the dealer's inspection was more stringant than the state required. End of the morning he fixed the bulb for $28 dollars and gave me a real crappy wash job.
I guess my peeve is if you treat a customer well with a good price up front and honest and fair service, it seems it would draw me back with out having to feel pensive about thier honesty. I do not claim this is not an issue with all makes, had a similiar incident with my Dodge, but in times like this it might be time to step up your game.
My heart goes out to those in the Auto business right now, it is looking ugly right now.
