I've got fire

I want to thank everyone who helped me with the valve timing problem. It seems that I was reading 0.12 as .012. What a difference an decimal place makes. Dad used to tell me that I couldn't see for lookin. I guess he was right.

I got it back together today and tried to start the engine. It did not start but it fired. I don't have the chokes hooked up so I did not expect it to start and run but it did fire and I think when I get all that hooked up It will start.

I am a lot closer than I was

A few controlled explosions can be a real motivator! Sounds like you've a handle on it now.

Now that you are satisfied that you have the cam indexed correctly and the chain back on you did go back and set those two valves back to .010 lash, right ? Just checking..

I did. I have started writing things on a white board. (when I don't forget) Thanks for the reminder. I need all the help I can get.

My mind doesn't seem to work as well as I would like anymore. Especially when I tear something down and don't get back to it for a few days (or weeks).

Again, thanks much.

In summer, you probably don't need very much "choke"; try almost completely covering the carb throats with your hands while someone else operates the starter. We used to do this all the time with my autocross Spitfire (somewhat of a "racing" engine) when it was "cold"!

My car has always needed a little choking to get it started. It might not have needed it but it always starts well this way. I have work to do on the carb. when I get some of the other issues solved.

Thanks for the advice though. As I said, I need all the help I can get.

Pete
