Hi guys - looking at the Moss catalog for a new TR6 distributor cap the provide two options;

560-145 $39.95 CAP, distributor, Lucas
560-125 $12.95 CAP, distributor, replacement

Is the Lucas cap really that much better?

I know it is only $25 +/- bucks more, but still...

I think they both work equally well, it's just the Lucas looks more like the original.

I have had both and the cheaper one with the aluminum contacts weighs less and is just not the same quality as the copper contact Lucas cap.

Think of your investment in your car and how many times are you going to be replacing a first quality cap again?

JMHO.

TD,

What does Jeff at Advanced use? He will probably have a better deal than that and he only sells quality parts.

Brosky is telling you true.

I went through several Bosch caps and rotors, found they were not up to quality needed for a 6. Accel used to make a good replacement that works. Remember same rotor and cap for 6 cyl MG's and Jaguars of that era.

Got my last one from the Jag dealer and it's been on the car for over 40K miles and three years(knock on wood).

FWIW, I have an Echlin rotor and Echlin cap with copper contacts, with just a few hundred miles on them. Last week it developed on occasional miss at low RPM (<1500). A few days later, on a longer club run, the miss became more frequent and more pronounced.
When I opened things up later, I found that the inside of the dist. cap was coated with what looked like a fine spray of copper particles. I cleaned them out thoroughly and the miss is no more.
Not sure it's the cap's fault. Noi sign of mechanical interference. Rotor looked fine. I have a Crane XR700 ign. with a Crane coil (PS20). I've seen comments on a couple of TR boards about crossfiring and other problems when going to higher energy ign. systems, but I'd never seen anything like this before. Just thought I'd throw that in.

Though fwiw, I just got a genuine Lucas cap and rotor for my Spitfire the other day. Aluminum contact, and the carbon center button retainer is mashed in, locking the button so it doesn't make good contact with the rotor.

I recently purchased a cap and rotor from Jeff's supplier.
The cap had a chunk broken off the bottom edge where the
cap "keys" onto the dizzy for proper orientation.

The rotor was missing the metal clip inside.

So who can tell what is quality?
