Do you mean "no real evidence of a water leak? I am guessing that is what you meant as a water leak in a running engine can often leave the combustion chamber VERY clean.

What would you like to do now? If you are only planning on going this far and the engine is still in the car, I would clean the tops of the pistons and have the head cleaned/checked/rebuilt. While you probably could go further we would need an idea of what your thoughts are.

You're going to do the valves, right?? If not you should check them by inverting the head and filling the chambers with a thin liquid to see if there is vave leakage.

Kurt.
