End Float - Overdrive Tailshaft

I am rebuilding an overdrive unit( all new thrust washers and bearings, springs, pistons as well as the modified valve spring to boost pressure) for my 58 BN4. After getting it all put together for bench testing it appears to be in a bind, especially at the tailshaft end where it seems to be heating up. The best thoughts at the NTAHC is that the end float is incorrect either at the tailshaft or the sun wheel. Determining the correct spacer at the tailshaft calls for a special tool. Is there a way to accomplish this measurement without the tool, or does anyone have the specs for the tool so I can get one made? Using an electric motor designed by the NTAHC for the purpose of checking OD units, everything operated with the trans in neutral and in gear, although when we had it in 3rd that is when we started to notice heat build up at the tailshaft end. The pressure gauge showed plenty of pressure but when we manually activated the OD lever it basically stalled the electric motor.I'm search for suggestions as to what may be causing the problem as well as how to properly measure the tailshaft end float.

perhaps this electric motor was designed to test/monitor other peramiters of the unit,eg.just press?just a sugg.

Welcome to a great forum.

There are several things that could be binding. I certainly wouldn't run it any more until the problem is solved.

I have a copy of the definitive how to for the type A OD, written by Nelson Riedel & published on "Buckeye Triumphs" before he pulled the article. It discusses how to set end float without the "tools" & a whole lot more.
