Door Panel - Upper Piece?

Hi All!

The upper section piece of my door panels have an inconsistent indent ( a few) on them.

Please refer to picture. Is there supposed to be some sort of backing material (padding) to make this area smoother, more of a finished look?

Thanks,
Bob

IT looks to me that this has been replaced and is not original? If that is the case then it looks to be an adhesion issue and the vinyl not properly applied causing this blemish.

MY memory from doing this 25 years ago that there is a stiff foam under the cover.. When pulling the old vinyl off parts of the foam may have come with it . If this was not repaired then an unsmooth surface would be the effect.

Yep there is a foam core under the cover.

In your case the installer may have used the original cores which have shrunk.

.It can be corrected by adding foam padding to the core in the area of the void.

.However, it must not protrude too high or it will impact the opening of the vent window.--Fwiw--Keoke

Thanks,
Bob

Thanks Pete, Keoke!

I know these cars weren't perfect, but knew something was amiss.

Looks like I have another fun project over the long weekend.
Gives me another excuse with the wife to hangout in the garage...

Thanks again,
Bob

Gee Bob, black and white photos?

Borrow your wife's hair dryer and on the high setting warm up the indented area and try and smooth out by rubbing, you never know, might work.

Hey Johnny,

My digital camera only takes black & white film...

I thought it would be easier to see the shadow of the indent in b&w. Something different...

The hair dryer might work, thanks for the suggestion. I think I'll pull the vinyl back, install the correct padding and reglue. Not really a big job...

Regards,
Bob

Bob, what's all this talk about indents and being smooth and finished. Got duct tape? Place a couple strips across those dents and go drive it.

I love Google. I searched for a roll of duct tape to post and look what came up.
