I lived in Germany, as a child, from 57 to 59. I remember being told about the Mercedes accident when I asked someone why Mercedes didn't race any more. I've never seen this footage; it's really fascinating, albeit in a disturbing way, to see it at last. I didn't know it existed.
I did get to attend the '58 German Grand Prix though, at the Nuerburgring, which I'll remember forever. Tony Brooks won it. Peter Collins was in a fatal accident; he died later that day, but I don't think we knew of that until we read it in the papers next day. The Brits were really going strong in those days, though; it's no wonder British sports cars generated so much interest in those days.
