Bugeye:disc to wire wheel conversion...help!

Hi Gang,
I'm new to this forum but not Britmobiles. My
current project is a Bugeye Sprite. Recently
I purchased a Bugeye body, and am in the
process of swapping parts from my MG Midget
mk II parts car onto it. Lotsa fun so far!
The front end went well (disc brakes are far
better than the original drums IMO), but
the rear end is fighting me. As everyone knows,
the Bugeye uses the quarter-eliptic rear, and
the Midget mkII uses more standard rear springs,
so the way the rear end housing mounts is totally
different, so I couldn't just swap the rear
end/brakes. Instead, I decided to swap the axels,
and brake plates. It turns out that there
is an extra 0.060" step in the housing where
the bearing seats (on the mkII rear end).
No sweat...make up a pair of shims and the drums
no longer hit the back plate. Now it looks like
the wheels stick out a bit more than they
should. Jeesh....

Has anyone here done this conversion (no second
guessing please!) successfully? I'd sure like to
hear what your experiences are before I get in
too deep! Thanks.

What about finding a complete wire wheel rearend from a MKII Sprite? That would eliminate all the guess work. Or... Using bolt on adapter plates for the rear?

OK, I just reread your post. From Horler: "...from body numbers ABL-20812 and GBE-16780 - I stress that body number rather than chasis number is used to define this point. Fitting wire wheels necessitated using a narrower axle casing along with correspondingly shorter handbrake actuating rods."

I'm trying to keep this project as inexpensive
as possible (stop laughing!), and am using
parts I have on hand. In retrospect, it would've
been easier to use my Midget MkII rear end
and just transfer the spring/torsion brakets
from the Bugeye rear end. As it turns out, the
wheels stick out about 0.5" more than they should
but it doesn't pose any problem at all, so I'll
live with it this way.

I have done a couple of "We Tight" wire wheel conversions. I just swapped out the axles and left the axle case as was.
I never had a problem, but I never raced on wire wheels either. I didn't baby it either. I just drove the way a Sports car should be driven.
