Hi Gang,
I'm new to this forum but not Britmobiles. My
current project is a Bugeye Sprite. Recently
I purchased a Bugeye body, and am in the
process of swapping parts from my MG Midget
mk II parts car onto it. Lotsa fun so far!
The front end went well (disc brakes are far
better than the original drums IMO), but
the rear end is fighting me. As everyone knows,
the Bugeye uses the quarter-eliptic rear, and
the Midget mkII uses more standard rear springs,
so the way the rear end housing mounts is totally
different, so I couldn't just swap the rear
end/brakes. Instead, I decided to swap the axels,
and brake plates. It turns out that there
is an extra 0.060" step in the housing where
the bearing seats (on the mkII rear end).
No sweat...make up a pair of shims and the drums
no longer hit the back plate. Now it looks like
the wheels stick out a bit more than they
should. Jeesh....
Has anyone here done this conversion (no second
guessing please!) successfully? I'd sure like to
hear what your experiences are before I get in
too deep! Thanks.
