BMW 2002 race car

Here are some pics of the 2002 I'm putting together. I'm not really much of a BMW fan, but as it goes with car guys, this car found me. It was set up as a highly modified autocross car that had been sitting for several years when I dragged it home. For the last couple of years, I have been poking at it from time to time. Eventually it should end up as a vintage racer but also see duty as a regional E production car. Hopefully in the Spring, it will see it's first open track day. Possibly a COM or EMRA time trial.

Love those old 2002's....had one years ago & it was almost as much fun as an MGB!

Do you have Lexan all around?

& I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to whack out the back of the doors on my racecar - here's a photo before the roll cage:

Looks great!
I may be at some COM events this year with my street car (white Miata).
My old pal, Mike French runs a lot of COM events and he's always chasing me to attend (Mike has a Toyota-powered Midget).
If I make any, I'll look for it.

I just have the lexan in the rear side windows and the rear windshield. I have two brand new glass windshields, so I'll keep that glass for the time being. The 2002 windscreens have a severe curve at the edges. It was tough enough bending the 3mm thick rear Lexan to fit. I certainly am not looking forward to bending the required 6mm thick for the front. Here is a pic of the side glass. The doors obviously have no provisions for glass.

Here is a pic of my MGB project. This was a race car that is slowly going back to a street car.

Are you going to leave the flares on it?

Yea. I built them myself out of fiberglass. I left about 2 inches of steel fender at the rear and across the top. The rest is fiberglass and body filler. For the fronts, I started with stock shaped fiberglass fenders and added on the flares. The fronts are still bolt ons. I also made the rear panel under where the bumper was. Inside the rear fenders, the outer halves of the inner fenders were cut away, and verticle panels were installed at the welded seam. Kind of like making a tubbed rear. The nose is going to be the rear panel from a mid 90's RX7 twin turbo turned upside down. Makes it look like a 911 front - sort of. Hey, it fits and looks better than the fiberglass motorsport valance I have.

I'm looking forward to that...what does a mid-90's RX7 look like anyway?

Here is the best I can do. The car is buried in the back of the garage with it's nose against the back wall. It won't move till Spring. So no pics of the piece on the car. I layed the piece next to a fiberglass motorsport valance for a comparison in size. Remember the MGB valance fits between the fenders. The RX7 piece will go up unto the flared fenders. You really need to see this in 3D to get the proper perspective. The RX7 rear bumper cover extends up to just under a rear hatch- hence the key hole which will now be down by the road on the B. The cover is made of that flexible plastic material that all of the new cars have. It bends and can be twisted and pulled into place real easy. Once it is mounted, I'll fill it with expandable foam to keep the shape. I also took a pic of it with a spare set of front Sebring fenders, and a grill I had laying around. You can start to get the idea.
