TR6 ? about importing a TR6 from Canada to USA

Anyone have any real experience with this?
There is available in Canada, a supposedly rust free TR6 that runs and is a little rough looking for 1500.00.

Talked to the guy and seems legit. He has no papers. Is willing to give a bill of sale as a parts car.

How many hassles might I run into trying to bring it back over the border to the USA?

Thanks

Very little at all.
Paul can get you in touch with a guy who just brought a Wedge into NY from The great north

Norton,

If you need someone to go and look at it for you (depending on where it is in Canada) send me a PM and I might be able to help you out.

Cheers,

I had no trouble going the other way. There will likely be a US website similar to the Canadian Government website i followed - follow the steps and you should be good. One thing to remember if you are having it shipped though is that it is more than double to ship a car that is not running (ie starts reliably and has brakes) than one that is and can travel on an open carrier - my first tr3 cost $2K to ship from CT to Ottawa - I think about 300 miles. BTW if it is near here I'd be happy to look at it... good luck, Kerry

Thanks but on the west coast area.
It's the fact that he states and told me when I called he has no papers. He will provide a Bill of Sale.
I just want it for parts.

I think the fact that there is no registry papers could/will make it difficult to bring across the border as ownership will be hard to prove.Proof of ownership is required, otherwise the vehicle will go into impound and serial(vin) numbers will be searched by the American authorities thru BC vehicle registry.
You can research the vin numbers yourself at any vehicle registry office (motor vehicles branch offices)for around $40.00 iirc,to check it for liens etc. They usually do not give out the last owners name at this level (PRIVACY ACT) but an application can be made to research this as well, takes forever tho.and I don't know the charge for that.

A few things to note here in Canada.

I am not aware of any province having a vehicle title (like the US does). Cars are registered up here and that is generally the proof of ownership. That being said, a Bill of Sale is generally sufficient to register the car up here.

You may have a problem with only a Bill of Sale to import the car. Coming from the US to Canada, my research has shown that US Customs won't let a vehicle get exported only on a Bill of Sale - it does require a title (for their stolen vehicle search). I would assume something similar would happen for import, but check the rules here: NHTSA

If you are simply importing the vehicle for parts, then change the thinking and import "automobile parts" instead of an "automobile". It could make a huge difference in the process. Simply because the car is all assembled does not mean it is not simply parts. Likely would never be able to get title to it, but if all you want is parts then it does not really matter.

Good luck.

I used Mackie Moving Systems. They were great. They will take care of everything, and customs won't delay them. They were a bit pricey, and there is an import fee based on the sales price.

BC has one insurance company,so your insurance paper is
your title.I would ask the seller to accomany you to customs,
just in case they won't let you bring it into the US.
Also,if you bring it in as parts, the duty is much less.

I bought mine in B.C. and had zero trouble bringing it over. That was 8 years ago, but I believe the bill of sale and proof of insurance were all I had at the time.
