Its a difficult process to remember every tool, car part, manual, and convienence in the shop,..

The take-away for the rest of us is that 15 minutes in the garage with a digital camera is a prudent precaution. I have lots of photos of the cars but none of open tool drawers, parts on the shelves, etc.

I have two local friends who also had severe garage fires in the past 3 months. Both occurred in the early evening and they were first aware something was amiss when the power went off. I hate to think how much more could have gone wrong if those fires had occurred at 3 a.m.

I just got a smoke detector for the garage and will wire it with the alarm inside the house. I expect I may get the odd false alarm from Tucson heat or other activity - but that is a minor inconvenience.

That is so true! I took pictures of the inside of the shop, but they are not up to date. I'll be installing CO/smoke detectors with a remote alarm and I will probably install a fire suppression system. At the very least I'll have 2 really large fire extinguishers, 1 located at each end of the new shop.

As it has been mentioned, this is a lesson to all of us.
i've spent the morning locating, testing extinguishers & evaluating my fire plans.
(not only in my garage, but the entire house.)
.......I gave myself a D-.

I realize now, there are a LOT of extinguisher makes and sizes out there to choose from & where you place them is critical.
(it took me 5 minutes to find my kitchen extinguisher......& then the pressure was low)

Fwiw: i found this rating site on "best " fire extinguisher.
https://thoroughlyreviewed.com/tools/best-fire-extinguisher/

i'm going with:
Kidde pro210. 4lbs. 2ea. $39. Ea on Amazon
kidde 466204. 10lbs 2ea. $50. Ea. On amazon

i'm with Rut.......size matters.

Best regards

Guy,
Theres nothing like a scary and potentially deadly event to clear your head! Gone are the thoughts of 'this can't happen to me'. I not only replaced and upgraded my fire extinguishers, I replaced and upgraded my hard wired smoke detectors to new smoke/CO detectors in my house Friday morning. My wife and I decided to do away with the pool and I can now build a shop/garage of approximately 24x40 with a lift and dedicated wiring for the compressor, welder, etc. I'll only get 1 shot at this, so I'll start a different topic requesting ideas for a shop.
Thanks, Rut
