TR4/4A TR4A for restoration--thoughts?

This TR4A just popped up on old eBay:
ebay #4561609886

I'm casting a wide net in my LBC search (TR4, MGB, Spitfire, Bugeye) and this one would fit into my budget. I spoke with the sellers--California Classix--and the fellow I spoke with seemed very honest.

My concerns--this is at the limits of my budget ($5500 US at the buy-it-now price). Engine hasn't run in a while, transmission condition is unknown. The pictures of the car look really good, and I must admit that a Triumph in green is one of my favorite things.

So I'm debating. The car is close enough to me that I would be able to beg a trailer to go get it, which is a plus. Just don't know. Any thoughts?

Thanks so much--ya'll are a huge help to a new guy like me.

I copied, and pasted the item#

$5,500 sounds like a lot of money for that car

I just got done looking at the ebay site and my feelings are Keep Looking. Just from the pictures, it appears that every body panel needs some kind of attention and the interior needs a good going over. Until you really get underneath it, who knows about the frame. You mentioned that the engine hasn't been started in a while and the trans. condition is unknown, both those items could cost you big money if they need repair. There are always TR4s being listed on ebay and on the internet,I'm sure you'll find a better deal soon. I just bought a 65 TR4A over the internet for less then $2000. It isn't the most beautiful car and it certainly does need work, but I was out driving it today, so they are out there. Be patient and keep your ears and eyes open, you'll find a better deal then that. Good Luck

I don't want to offend anyone by saying this, but CaliforniaClassix always seems to overprice and underdeliver. They specialize in cars that are Maaco over bondo. Heard many bad things about many different cars that have come through their place.

Guess I'm always wary of eBay items that are sold 'as is' & untested but with the implication that they could be easily put right. If that is the case why wouldn't the seller 'easily' start the engine and be able to say it runs, etc?

For $500 more I got an original TR4 from a seller who had taken the time and expense to sort out the fluids, brakes & engine so he was able to state with confidence his assessment of the car's condition. $5,500 seems like a lot for a non-runner.

Thanks all for your thoughts. I've still got a lot to learn about this whole buy-a-LBC thing. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Yet another reason that I'm glad I found this group. My education continues... [cue the sound of feet walking away from this car]

Drew,
I too had LBC dreams growing up. I like your website quite a bit. Hopefully you can make the dream a reality. My TR250 found me and I am quite pleased with it. I think for the money you have, the TR4 is probably your best option. Good luck with you search and keep us posted....

I agree with what most others have offered. Additionally (and not sure if it means anything or not), this car was offered on eBay a month or so ago. Not sure how that auction ended up.
