Re: Going for a little walk

Ok not quite 11. A great great day. Woke up grabbed some breakfast and a taxi to our starting point. And away we went. Quite a peaceful walk, cool and foggy as we started to Santiago. The first part was forest and dirt tracks. Came to our first bar and met our friends from Malta who walked with us into the city. Also ran into our St. Louis friends and New Hampshire. After the first cafe we walked around the end of the airport and soon were on suburban streets. Not what I expected. By now the sun had come out so we stopped for exquisite gelato- and kept on walking.

finally got into the city and after what seemed like forever found the cathedral. As we walked we passed a recycling bin so in went the walking poles. And then the water bottle so we arrived feeling very light!

mass was finishing at the cathedral so we didn’t even try to enter. Instead we went straight to the office of pilgrims to get our Compostela. Will post a pic later. Took just over and hour. Earlier tori had suggested messaging katherine another friend- I almost said don’t worry this is the Camino we will see her - sure enough she was in line ahead of us.

After this a lunch - well more of a bottle of champagne with appetizers- at the Parador hotel. The Parador is a chain of state run hotels in converted monasteries and castles and the like. Then we went to find our hotel- actually a small apartment. Now resting and tomorrow the pilgrims mass.

    Slight diversion.

had supper tonight in a lovely square at a lovely restaurant. Saw this gorgeous building with a door open and realized there was a car inside. Yes friends it is a two car garage- Basil should be along soon with pics - I want a living room that looks like this never mind a garage!

Re: Going for a little walk

Just uploaded my two Santiago documents. The Compostela (vertical) and the other saying how far we walked- both Latin.
it was about an hour waiting to get them. Btw if I hadn’t mentioned it people are surprised how full the Camino is this time of year. In 2012 192k people walked- last year 300k. With half in the summer months. Each day we are hearing of just over 1000 people arriving in Santiago.

Wow, that is quite the journey you have had JP. I have enjoyed your trip so much that I am a bit crestfallen now that it is over.

Re: Going for a little walk

Not quite over yet today was the pilgrims mass. Quite lovely- very crowded with not just pilgrims but tour buses and tourists and everyone. We ran into our traveling friend Sabina from Germany and we sat on some stairs as the pews were full. Couldn’t understand much but could sing some of the responses. For me the most powerful part was passing the peace in many many languages.

at the cathedral they have a tradition of swinging the incense thurible. It doesn’t happen every service as it is costly to do (about 400 euros) today they did - really amazing- I took some video which I hope Basil can post.

We had to do some shopping so about 3.5 km away is the shopping mall - oh says tori we might as well walk - so we did. Funnily literally walking the Camino in reverse. Went to the food court to get something cold to drink- Burger King! (No we didn’t eat- though I bet it has been 25 years since I have gone this long without fast food) anyway I can report that at Burger King beer is cheaper than soda - though you can refill your soda.
