ZDDP in oil

why

Just back from 2 week trip so maybe already discussed, but Moss mag had article about need for ZDDP(zincblahblah) in oil used in engines since some current oils now leave it out. Seemed to mean that ZDDP is only necessary during break-in of rebuilt engines, seemed not to say it is necessary in already broken-in engines. Anyone have any facts about its use in original engines used in lightly stressed (nonracing) circumstances.
