Here is a 73 i picked up yesterday. If you go to Hemmings motor news on line you will see it listed in Mereteth NH. See if you think the add matches the car! The body is not straight and i will try to post pics of that later. I can not believe anyone could screw up just about everything on one car. Manifold thickness, headlight inner retainer spring as a throttle return spring, one door armrest correct and the other is pictured, seat backs are not on the correct sides, headlight switch is off but looks on, top fit....yea thats a joke, door fit? another joke. The rear wiring harness does not go under the car for some reason. How about the steel brake line flopping less than 1/2 inch from the crank pulley! The front fender patch panels are horrable and the driver side rocker panel is loose at the bottom-poor attempt at welding. I guess if you want to lower a MGB just put the both front crossmember pads on the bottom of the unit and not between the x-member and the body! Why did i not think of that? I will try to post a pic of the appraisal. Its just as OFF as the car! Its really worth looking up the add before commenting. The list of poor workmanship will get longer once i really did into it. The appraisal says the original engine and trans are rebuilt! It was pumping oil out the dipstick tube! I guess i better get back in the garage. I have a major project ahead of me. Bob

Well I won't be nasty or sarcastic, but I do hope you didn't put $13,000 into that car.
If I know you, it will be better than new in short time.

You do have a project, so get to work young man.

Dave :savewave:

P.S. "GOOD LUCK"

Professional frame off restoration? Wow. Bob, I think I'd get another appraiser. It's a shame that you bought a bunch of unanticipated work. Hope you can recover your investment. PJ

I did not purchase the car from the add in Hemmings. I am mainly posting this so people will be aware of this sort of dealings.I guess its a good thing the original builder or seller sold the car. We do not need these kind of people in the MG hobby. Plus the appraiser should quit if he is blind! He listed ALL parts of the car as EXCELLENT! I will try to get a pic of that up today. I believe the owner had more than 13 large in the car. But a unsafe car thats misrepresented is uncalled for. I wish everyone on this board could see this mess in person. Bob

Looks like it has one of those QUALITY Moss repro bumpers I keep hearing about on this board.

Bob
I am a little lost, did you buy this car or are you just pointing out what a botch job it is?

It belongs to me now! The restoration....was finished about 2 years ago and driven 60 miles.

I have been tinkering on it and the front engine side cover is plugged. That would explain the oil being pumped out of the dipstick tube. The throttle cable bracket was bent 180 degrees from where it should be.That may be why the heavy throttle return spring was being used. I am pointing out the botch job stuff as I come across them. In all my years working on British cars this is the worst put together car i have come across. Its mostly just stupid stuff. If you do one side each way at least you would get one side correct!??? That would explain the mirror base and the interior handle.

I am not complaining about the car. I am more than happy with the deal i got on it. Just sharing what you can run into.

Bob

2-year old 'restoration'....at least it's clean, Bob..that should make redoing things a little easier! hehehe

Would be interesting to learn why the 2 snaps are on the trunk lid.

Is the wiring harness under all that blue tape any good?

How much of the body problems are you gonna tackle?

It looks like a perfectly good restoration to me...

...if you live in the bizarro world!

Tony, i would guess the 2 rear snaps were to fill in holes for a old dealer badge and forgotten when painting. The wiring harness looks like it may be new. I have a reciept for blue tape also. Thats probably how he rerouted the rear harness and blended it in. I am still wondering about the body. Its very presentable at 40 feet. I may just make it safe and send it away. It has a peco LCB header and peco big bore exhaust. I would have expected el-cheapo headers and exhaust. The timing was set at 2 degrees after TDC. I have set it at 10 BTDC and think that may help it go. The tie rod end jamb nuts were also loose! OH.. the sucker also has a larger front sway bar. Bob

An outstanding example of the lack of respect these cars have experienced throughout their existence. Why bother to do anything like FIND OUT how it should be? It's a little toy car, a joke... Besides, it ain't 'merican. Cob it together an' fob it off.

The good news is: there are those out there now who KNOW the cars and who're willing to repair or resurrect them to an honest standard. Plenty of people now as an 'audience' for 'em too: Guys 'n gals who had one in college, now ready and able to own one and care for it properly. "Youth regained" an' all that.

I have "horror stories" for about any Euro marque you can name. Usually the result of an owner without working knowledge, taking it to a wrench with no experience on make/model not willing to let money 'slip away'. "Good enuff" was their "standard".

I am un-doing 30 years of "gas station maintenance" on my Jag.

Some is quite simple, easy to have done right in the first place.

Those doors....from the photo, almost looks like the wrong door seals simply preventing full closure?

Dave

Today i installed the crossmember pads and removed the seats I was going to just reverse them to the proper sides. The lower material was not glued to the foam so there was no shape to the seats. When i removed the covers i discovered that the lower foam was installed on the wrong seat and did not match the covers. So swap the foam-glue the botoms covers and reinstall on the frames. While i was under the car i noticed the slave cyl had the flex hose in the wrong port. The distributor clamp is on upside down,One seat belt is installed odd and there is silicone brake fluid leaking from the junction block. That explains the reason the fluid was very low in the brake master. I can't wait to get to the rear of the car! Bob

yer becoming a pretty good diagnostician, eh Bob?

Bob,

I noticed in the pics that it has two driver seats in it...I think I saw another post on here recenty that said that his car had two passenger seats. Maybe find him to trade? Good Luck with this one!

Bruce

Bruce, There are a real pair of seats in the car. Someone just got their lefts and rights installed on the wrong sides. I emailed the original seller in New Hampshire requesting information on the car and have not heard back yet. In the stack of bills there are no engine parts listed except gaskets and accessories like the carb and alt. and valve cover. The appraisal says rebuilt engine. The brake lights are hooked up to the running light bulbs and the signals are hooked to the brake light bulbs in the rear. I have not tried the signals yet. Maybe the horn will blow when i use the signals! More as i dig deeper into this car. Bob

Bob;

Where else can you have this much fun with your clothes on!
I suppose the gauges all read right to left instead of the other way.
Keep us up to speed.

Dave :savewave:

P.S. you'll be :driving: in no time

I found one bill in the box with a name and phone number. I made the call and spoke with the builder! He is a engineer that enjoys cars and working on them. I think the seller from Hemmings was unaware of the condition of the car and its problems. The owner has failing health and i think his son sold the car for him. The builder was pretty proud of the car. I did discover that the engine is original and not rebuilt. The compression number are just over 160 on all cylinders. I am glad it has not been rebuilt!!!i can not imagine the head being bolted on backwards. I also found out the paint is PPG acrylic enamel and in the color of Carmine. I may send him the final list of screwed up things one day. This is not the only MGB he has screwed together! I can not believe there is another one out there! So far i am still having fun with it. Very scary that the guy is an engineer-If he cant build an MG properly, I hate to see what engineering blunders he makes at work. Usually engineer's are perfectionist. Are you sure he is not an engineer on a train instead?
