Your opinion- engine and trans removal as a unit?

So it is all coming out eventually...engine, trans, drive shaft, diff, rear axle etc-- would love your opinion on taking engine and trans out as a unit, or one at a time. I know it doesn't matter because in the end it is all coming out anyway. Pros and cons of one way vs the other?

General thought is that it's easier to do them both together.

The only way to do it IMHO is as a unit! Drain the tranny, disconnect the drive-shaft at the axle and remove, disconnect all the anciliaries to the engine (don't forget the ground-strap by the starter!!), remove trans. mount bolts (from underneath and inside at each side of the tunnel),disconnect the clutch slave cylinder (I like to keep it connected to the line and tie the push-lever so that bleeding is not necessary), remove the shift lever, remove the radiator, undo the motor mounts and lift it all out! A decent engine hoist and leveler and a few wrenches are the tools needed. It really isn't a daunting task! Is your car a bugeye? Removing the bonnet (hood) is also a very good idea! Others will have better pointers on later cars as far as the front body-work!

PS I like to just undo the intake (carbs & manifold as a unit) and exhaust manifolds and just set them to the side!

Don't forget the oil pressure line as well. Close by the ground strap. And there are 4 bolts holding in thtranny.

My first and only engine pull was my Midget last spring. As a unit, no problems, it even ran when I put it back, imagine that.
Where are you in Michigan?

Pretty straight forward... 6 beers and 4 hours OR... 1 beer and 2 hours if you have never done it before. About the third time takes less than an hour.

and how many beers?

I'm with the rest of the guys. Pull as a unit. Haulin' the transmission out from the engine bay by hand can work a number on your back. It's not that heavy, but awkward. Drain oil from engine and transmission before you start. Other suggestion is to put towels or blanket to cover edges of the engine bay so you don't scuff paint off.
