I feel your pain, Basil.
In '83, I was working for an aircraft manufacturer that was running out of work. I would walk past a part of the plant that was dark, quiet, and empty, while it seemed that only the day before it had been filled with tools, parts, busy workers, and the sound of rivet guns and drill motors. Eerie.
The union positions were laid off by hire date. The layoffs were posted throughout the plant and listed the name and hire date of each laid-off employee.
It was very disconcerting to watch the hire dates get closer and closer to mine.
That was a bad time.
