Yesterdays work on Sprite

The little red one is coming along.

Yesterdays effort added a green idiot light in the center between tach and speedo that blinks whenever a turn signal is on.

Also my horn now works and I located the wires to the fuel gauge, but it goes all the way to the right when connected. Maybe I'm doing something wrong there.

oh, and I put the correct wiper on instead of the too long wiper that was on there - so nice having a parts car!!

Forgot the fun part - while working on the car at least a dozen people had to stop and talk about the car.
So distracting...

The funniest one was this guy who pulls up in his new Corvette, very shiny and very powerful. He hits the button and the window lowers and he says:

"That's a cool car, how much power does it have?"
I said "Hey, it's got a Nine Hundred and Forty Eight cc motor and must have a whopping 45 horse power!!"
He laughed and said "Boy they don't make them like that any more!"

I noticed that kids seem to love these little cars. Whenever I drive through the neighborhood in the sprite, i turn into the pied piper of the elementary school contingency.

With your turn indicator light, was it the bulb or flasher? My dash light doesn't blink (or even turn on), although my turn indicators do work.

"It works... now it doesn't work... now it works... now it doesn't work..."

But anyway, I really wonder why they don't make cars like these anymore. Yeah, yeah, safety rules. But still, they can make very small Jap and Italian cars that pass safety standards in Europe, (which are along the lines of the American standards) but no small FUN cars like the Sprite. Have people grown too complacent and f*t a**ed to live without electric windows, automatic gearboxes and auto door locks?

Gosh, I really like these Sprites!

Oh, and where are the pictures?

FENRIS sprite! I love it! I've often thought of Grendel invading my garage when facing particularly arcane Sprite 'issues,' but Fenris... now THAT takes it.

Neither - it just wasn't connected at all. Like so many other things on the dash. BillM discovered the wire while we were connecting up little things like HEADLIGHTS and TURN SIGNALS!!

I hooked it up to the green center lamp and it worked!

Yes, I need to get out and take more pics. It's been pretty rainy since Friday and yesterday was all about connecting up more stuff.

The early Spridgets used a 3-post flasher unit- the third connection activates the indicator light. Usually the 3-post unit has been replaced by a 2 post (common) unit and the indicator wire just left hanging.
Check this out, it may solve your question.

Ok, I have loaded some pictures up on Picasa:

Here's a nice shot:

That really is a neat looking little car, though I'm not quite sure about the bonnet.

The square bodied side screen cars are really clean designs. Very elegant and simple.

that's a sweet little car!

Thanks, Bill. I'll check it.

What's with the bonnet, Rick? Was there something "big" under it?

The story goes that sometime like 30 years ago they had a V8 in there.
Now just who replaced that with a 948 Bugeye motor I couldn't tell you...

Thanks for the comments, I do have three proper Sprite bonnets, just have to get one of them painted!

"Grendel"...I don't think too many readers know that allusion...quite impressive image too when faced with the sometimes "monstrous" issues we face keeping our Sprites rolling.

Or something very close to that!

Hi RickB

Did you ever get that fuel gauge working? It sounds like the green/black wire from the gauge to the sender is either broken or not connected.

I agree, I think I have to jack up the back and take a look at the tank end of the wire. If it's connected there and I see resistance between it and ground then I'll need to check continuity between the dash and the tank. One way or another I think I'll be able to get that gauge working. (unless the sender unit is bad)

Looks great but wow that hood. I'll bet you can sell it for three times what a stock one would cost even painted.

Actually someone has spoken for it, but I needed a red hood so I could get it on the road. The buyer has agreed to let me use it until I can replace it then send it to him.
