XKE Power Steering

Greetings,

I am a long time owner of a 1969 E-type equipped with power steering. Recently I had to have the steering rack replaced. The mechanic filled the system with power steering fluid (makes sense) however my manual calls out automatic transmission fluid as the proper thing to use. Now, I do not have any idea as to the properties of either fluid and I am sure many improvements to both have been made over the last 35 years, but is there any reason I should be concerned about the fluid that was used in the repair? Thanks for your opinions.

whose fluid?
Probably no biggie. Most modern power steering fluids are more capable than atf's from 69. Gotta remember that power steering fluid was virtually a non entity in 69. Most companies used atf, until they found out that some atf's attacked the seals.

Ron,

thanks for the reply. That is the answer I had hoped/expected to get. In answer to your question I believe the power steering fluid used was made by BG Products.

Howdy Don;

I`ve had 4 E-Types so far but all were Series I`s with the exception of my `69 OTS I had:

None of which had PS but I would suspect that Ron is correct in saying either one would be OK to use these days: It would seem to me that a gear oil would offer more lubricity but there must be a reason for PS fluid!
