XKE interior kits

Hi all,

I’ve been AWOL for a while and lost my old login & password. Anyway, I’m working on a 67 E type FHC and am looking into interior kits. Has anyone had experience (good or bad) with OSJI? They seem to have a pretty complete kit. Any other recommendations?

TIA & cheers,

John

Hi John, welcome back. I'm currently restoring a 67 OTS EType. The last time I put an interior in my car I used Bassets and was very pleased with the quality and originality of their product.

Thanks Basil,

I’ve been lurking occasionally, but haven’t posted in quite a while. Thanks for the tip on Bassett’s, do they have a website? I’m also curious about the 1967 E type designations. Is your car a Series 1, 1.5 or 2? Mine seems to have all the ser 1 components (3 carbs, toggle switches, no headrests etc.), but open headlights that are different from the ser 2 style. I’ve been told that it is a “Series One-And-A-Half”, but I’m not sure if this was an official designation or just a convenient name for the DOT compliant stop-gap models imported to the States.

Maybe other 1967 owners have some thoughts also.

Cheers,

John

I used an OSJI kit in my 64 FHC and was very pleased with the quality and fit. They are also very helpful if you have any problems.
During the 67 model year the HL covers were deleted at 1E34120(except for 34130,34139 & 34212) and the curley hubs at 1R34339( chrome) & 1E34458( painted). With these exceptions and the fact that the gold head changed to natural aluminum (no #'s available) your car is the same as an early 67.
The 68's are considered to be the 1 & 1/2's as they have basically the late 67 body with the S2 engine area and dash board, etc.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the info. My car is #1E33159 (VIN # on the title is J671E33159), and all the component #’s match the ID plate. It has the gold colored cyl head. Were they numbered in production sequence?...if so, I wonder why I have uncovered headlights.

Glad to hear of your favorable experience with OSJI.

Cheers,

John

I don't know unless the bonnet was changed at some time. The 1R34130 comes from Jaguar build records that were presented at the JCNA AGM in 1994 by the late Charlie Morgan who worked in the Jaguar Archieves in the US. Jaguar Spares Bulletin P198 lists Canada and US cars at 1E34113 and the other numbers that were excepted that I mentioned. Strange that the build records do not totally agree with the spares bulletin.

Thanks Basil, I checked the website and will email them re prices & details on the interior kit.

Hi Bob, you may be correct that the original bonnet was replaced due to collision damage etc. (I don’t have a good history of the car), I’ll investigate further. Do you know if the HL covers & associated hardware can be fitted to the open light bonnets? Or is it a different stamping? I prefer the looks of the covered lights, and of course I want to restore the car to the correct configuration as it was when it left the factory.

Thanks again,

John

John,
I've never done this but have seen cars that it was done on. Just the rims and glass are going to be pretty costly but so will the eyebrows and headlight trim if you have to replace what you now have.

Hi Bob,

I’ll try to find what’s up with the bonnet/headlights. There is a photo of the car in the “member’s rides” section of this site….Jaguars, 4th row down, second from the right (sitting on a trailer). As I recall, the “eyebrows” on this car are different from the series 2 & 3.

I guess these mysteries are the price we pay for adopting an orphan with an unknown past. I’ve already had to replace the crankshaft & one con rod due to a previous owner’s botched repair attempts.

Cheers,

John

Hi John,

The 1975 XJ6C that I just bought this year has an OSJI interior from the previous owner's restoration. I can tell you that they seem to be correct, at least in the case of the XJ6C, and the leather looks and feels like that of an original. Unfortunately, I don't believe that mine was professionally installed and the headrests were for some reason never put back on the seats, however it still turned out well. I plan to put the car back to its original Silver Metallic/Red leather combination and plan to buy the kit from OSJI (I think they were called G.W. Bartlett in the recent past). I know that their kits are listed as a selling point for many restored Jaguars in this area as they are located in Muncie, Indiana which is close to where I live. I have never purchased an interior kit and am apprehensive about spending that much money and being disappointed as well. But if the kit on my car is any indication of their work, I don't think you will be disappointed if you decide to use them. Good luck and hope all goes well with the restoration! Keep me posted on which company you go with, as I am open to suggestions for interiors as well.
By the way, when I have browsed ebay for rare or NLA parts, I once in a while run across an OSJI kit that never was installed for whatever reason... just a thought, but you may check for a bargain. I found the one I need in Red, but it turned out to be for a RHD Coupe... would have been a steal otherwise. You may have better luck on the "E" type.
