I'm a Healey guy who just aquired an XK140 to restore. I'm looking for a recommendation on a good restoration book to buy. I also have a couple quick questions this morning. I'm trying to determine the original color of this particular car. Can I assume that Jaguar painted in the engine compartment the same color as the body? Also, are the forward floor panels made out of wood? Mac

The floors on my 150 have plywood inserts. I would think your 140 would as well. BTW, the trunk lid frame (the ribs running across) is wood as well. That is the only wood other than the obvious areas like the dash. The engine compartment is the same color as the exterior of the car on all of the 140's and 150's I have seen. I think you might be able to get the vin/mfg numbers off the plaque on the firewall and I think they will decode into colors if that is an objective.

Thanks vettedog. I have the ngine build plate bot not sure how to de-code. I will check the internet for something on that. I'm pretty sure it was green since the color under the build plate looks original. Not British Racing Green but most likely one of the other two, pastel green or suede green. Mac

The book(s) you want to get are in the 'original' series. There are two versions of 'Original Jaguar XK'. Both by Philip Porter. One just a newer edition of the other, and the earlier out of print I think. Get both. Shouldn't be hard to find on ebay.

*Edit*... looks like there are three editions perhaps of that... the first two in hardbound are the ones I've got... time to go shopping again.
*End edit*

Also find a copy of the 'Jaguar Enthusiast Club on Jaguar XK 120 Restoration'. Mostly a compilation of articles from the club magazine, but very informative, and most things would be applicable to a XK140.

And get a copy (or original) of the original service and parts manuals.

You get all them, and you'll be set bookwise. All turn up regularly on ebay.

To definitavely get the color, get the JDHT (Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust) certificate for your car. It can be hard to find the original color if the car has been restored or properly re-sprayed in its life. You'd have to look for overspray in very hidden areas.

You're in for a lot of fun... Enjoy!
