I've just bought an XJS -75 Mint condition but it's missing the engine so I'm looking for a XJ40 3,6l. (whole car) with less than 10k miles and do not have to be taxed or anything. My question is how much should I pay for one in the Newcastle area.

I should imagine that you can find a rusty example with strong running gear for a few hundred pounds. Even nice cars in condition 1 would fetch less than three grand according to the Practical Classics price guide. The problem would be finding any XJ40 with less than 10k on the clock.

Joseph,
The XJ40 3.6 litre was only made for 3 years - '87,'88, '89. After that, it was the 4.0 litre. Later XJS Jags went the same way with the 4.0 litre engine. If I were in your position, I would expand my search to include the 4.0 litre which was in the XJ40 from 1990 until 1997. This will increase the number of available cars to choose from.

The chances of finding an XJ40 with 10,000 miles on it will be slim at best. The price that it will sell for will most likely be out of the range you want to pay. If taken care of, these engines are great!! My '88 has 205,000 miles on it and it is still going strong.

I suspect you'll find it almost impossible to find a car with less than 10K miles. Even a parts car is likely to have been cannibalized long ago.

UK e-bay regularly seems to have a number of them in the ÂŁ200-500 range, and even "nicer" ones ~ÂŁ12-1500 generally have over 100K miles.

I presume you're interested in Newcastle for North Sea ferries to Scandanavia. For that area you might try the Auto Trader website using a Postcode for Newcastle (Try NE1 1AA). You can limit the search to a fixed distance around Newcastle if you want. The search is more general though and would turn up all XJ models. I think you'll find these prices are higher for cars that are probably newer and in better condition.

Good luck....
