XJ concept

What do you think of the Jaguar XJ concept? I think it’s nice to see something fresh from a company that has mostly relied on traditionalism… they make great cars, so why not branch out a little further and try something different?

Some people I’ve talked totally hate this look, though… And I’ll admit I still prefer XK (but I’m biased toward coupes). Thoughts?

We were in Pebble Beach with my father when Jag unveiled it. The crowd's reaction was very mixed -- most admired the obvious craftsmanship and the technology, but the audience were almost entirely old car people, so most didn't love the exterior shape. There were those, however, who loved it for the very reason you cite -- time for something new, just as the XK120, the MK1 and Mk2, the E-Type and the XJS were bold and new in their time.

From my perspective, I think the car's lines are outrageous and seductive, with one major exception. I believe that the market segment that it finds itself in is populated by cars with very similar shapes. The car could have made itself stand out more by having incorporated some traditional Jaguar design cues into the front end.

But that's been my complaint with the XF. Outrageous looking beast, but I hate the front end.

I imagine this debate will rage on for as long as they make the car.
 
I would have loved to see the mixed reaction on people's faces at the unveiling!

That's funny you say the front end is your biggest issue, because I've actually heard more controversy surrounding the rear of the car! Haha...
 
I went to the Houston Auto Show yesterday and saw the car "in the flesh", and, like the Lotus Evora, it looks a lot better than in a photograph. I think it must be the 3-dimensional effect, but I like both of those cars.
Not that I'm in the market for a large Jag-like car, though as I get older I am tempted by the Evora.
Now, how to raise the money....
 
Traditional Jag lover. Fugly comes close. Would rather see them going retro like Ford did with the T-Bird and Mustang.
 
First off, I wouldn't call the car a "concept" since they are actually putting it into production, and it was never introduced as a concept, although a similar concept was released.

I do like the new Xj, although I really like the older ones. It's like they took the Xf, and spruced it up a bit. I'm not %100 percent on the front, or rear, or interior, but you cannot stop progress.

I think Jaguar would only start to go "retro" if it were still owned by Ford (although the new Xj has been in the process of being designed/built in the past several years). It seems like it's just the American cars going retro, and that's on the impractical types of cars (the big muscle cars). Again, going retro, Jaguar tired that a bit when they released the S-Type, which didn't do too well, and looked a bit disappointing.

Regardless, a Jaguar is a Jaguar, and I will continue to support the company until they do something too outrageous.
