XJ 6 Starter

Hi all

Any ideas on the life span of the starter for the 97 xj 6

mine seems to have a grinding sound and takes a bit to turn the engine over.

Any thoughts

Check to make sure that all mounting bolts are tight. The grinding may be a result of the starter torque shifting slighly because the bolts are not tight causing the gear to misalign with the ring gear. Check the ground strap from the engine to the frame in the area of the front cross member for tightness and lack of corrosion that would increase the resistance. Check the battery positive lead where it attaches to the back of the starter. Check the battery positive and negative connections for tightness and corrosion. Also check where the battery negative lead connects for the same problems of looseness and corrosion.

All of the above should be more than enough. To the best of my knowledge, the starters don't generally "go" on our cars (yes, I also have a 1997 Xj6L).

Thanks guys will give it a go over
