Yesterday the wifes 2003 X Type started fine and I backed it out of the basement. Shut it off and then pulled my 69 Sprite out. I then got in the Jag and it would not start. Just a click. I got the jumper cables out and found that the ground post on the battery was corroded. I cleaned the battery post and got it started. It was driven to the Church then to my sister in laws then to the grocerie store each time starting without any problems. This morning the wife calls and says it will not start. When I get back to the house the car is still in the basement and the wife has disconnected the battery. She said check this out and put the ground cable back on the battery. Every relay and light in that thing started flashing. Even the trunk light was flashing. I talked with some of the guys here at work and most have said it is a ground problem with the ECM. Anyone else encountered a simular issue.
Thanks in advance
Anthony

Replace the BATTERY, THE CASE IS CRACKED. If you remove the earth cable you will see the crack at the negative post and electrolyte is leaking. I have replaced over 20 batteries and used sodium bicarbonate to clean the connector and tray. I have only seen this on X-Type OEM batteries. bob

Thanks Bob
You are correct. I have not replaced the battery as yet however I did top up the low cell and cleaned the Ground terminals. It was difficult getting the two terminals apart because of the amount of corrosion. I left the trickle charger on it overnight and it started fine yesterday morning. I left it parked without the charger on it for twelve hours and it still started fine last night. It also started fine this morning. I do expect to be replacing the battery very very soon. The thing that pleased me the most is the problem that I had with the knocking when the AC was on that had started a few days ago went away with the battery issue. It appears that the ground issue was affecting the AC Clutch operation. The strange thing was that it would knock louder as you turned the steering. Sense taking care of the ground issue the knock is gone.

Thanks again for the reply.
Anthony
