Wow

Heh, have seen it listed as an option, but never actually seen one.

i have a few of these in the damaged state as mention in the ebay auction. i have parted about five tr7 and one tr8 since the early eighties and all the ones i have run across have been damage (lense melted).
it's to easy for light to be left on. if i remember right the light is activated by just lifting it out of the holding mount, which makes it easy to partially dislodge when you shut the door.

These were commonplace during the 70's and 80's. It was an accessory item that was generally available for any BL car over the counter, and quite a few people fitted them as they were perfect for reading maps. A very similar item was manufactured by/for Halfords, which looked just about identical. I had installed one in my '76 Spitfire.
