Woodruff key stuck [generator]

I am changing my generator, and cannot remove the key.
I have tried tapping it with a hammer, pulling with vise-grips, levering at the end with a flat blade screwdriver, and squirting liquid wrench.
I can't think of any way to heat the shaft while cooling the key, so I'm stuck!
Suggestions welcomed, Simon.

Sometimes they can be removed with a pair of diagonal wire cutters. Use the cutter to get a really good grip then lever up. But sounds like you've already used some extreme tactics so perhaps it's beyond that working.

If it was me I'd be reaching for the Dremel (and a new key).

/bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/iagree.gifThe other thing that has worked for me, sometimes, is to use a cold chisel (preferably one that's kind of dull) between the corner of the key & the shaft. Support the other end of the shaft on a block of wood, and give the chisel a sharp rap with a BFH. The shock of the blow helps loosen the key.

If that doesn't work (sometimes it just shears the corner of the key off); then cut through the key in line with the shaft, with a Dremel & abrasive cut-off wheel.

Of course, if you are changing the generator, just leave the old key in the old generator and buy a new key for the new one /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Try heating the key with a torch and then rubbing the sides with an old wax candle. The wax melts and forces its way around the key and also lubricates it for removal.

Thanks for the suggestions, if the chisel doesn't work I'll call the place where I got the generator and ask if he has keys, seems simplest.
Thanks again, Simon.
