wiring mess

I am a fairly new TR owner, so my first impulse was to drive the car & check it out later. I checked the safety items, had it inspected as required by Virginia law & hit the road. I was well pleased with the over-all performance of the car. (still don't have the timing exactly right)
My problem started when the turn signas quit. One of the previous owners had wired the brake warning light and hazard warning light to be the turn signal indicators. I believe he had a bucket of color coded wire and tried to use them all on this project. After about 7 hours, I finally got all of the lights in the proper sockets and wired correctly and the turn signals working.
I can see a wiring harness in my future.

If it were easy, anybody could do it.

Am I the only one who wonders why some people just think they can "improve" their cars in such bizarre ways? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

The only reason I can think of for doing the re-wire is that the guy was blind and could not see the origional turn signal indicator.

He probably had Tonya Harding help him.

one day I will be the DPO, when I purchased my 71 TR6 last fall, I had heard the problems with wiring, well I turned on the lights felt the wires under the dash and several were heating up, I did clean the connections and even found one wire stripped and another wraped around it no solder no crimp just tape. I know this is not good, especially after installing halogen lights. After reviewing the book how to up grade your TR6 the notion of relays seems a good Idea so now I have relays for, head lights, fog lights, all running lights on one relay, electric fuel pump( which also is set to run through an oil pressure switch so it only runs when oil pressure is present, and electric fan relay. And I installed a new Fuse block that uses current fuses. Now all the major loads are on relays and only small current runs through the small gauge wires under the dash, hopefully the new light switch will last for a while. I got a label maker thats made for wire and labeled all new wires and even existing wires when necessary, I have tried to make the wiring more presentable with the plastic sheathing. Its far from a factory wiring harness but I also had the dreaded dead end wires with tape on them from the several previous owners.

Hey Hondo,
What exactly is a label maker for wires and how does it work? I want one but don't know what I want. Does that make sense?

Bill

you can get it at an electrical supply house, it basically has a key pad on the front, you type in what you want to print out. You can print on heat shrink tubing in different sizes and colors and you can also print on a white tape that you wrap around wires. My brother works for and electrial supplier so he got me one for free, that was the best part

Oh dear, I can see me now. Labeling everything in the car. Just what I need.

Bill

you can also use a Brother P-Touch labeler (available anywhere for cheap) and then use clear heat shrink tubing (partsexpress.com) around the label to make them semi-permanent. I do home theater and other home technology stuff and use this for the home owner.
