TR4/4A Wiring Harness - choices [TR4]

I have come to the realization that my TR4 wiring harness is beyond any reasonable repair. The plan was to make it work but inspection has yielded PO patch jobs, splices, deleted rheostat.. rewired dipper switch.. and now.. a few prior melt downs discovered under toasted electrical tape. My question to the forum is what is the best direct harness replacement option? I'm reading what is offered by the "usual" vendors.. I also see some prior posts about British wiring. Any recent experiences good or bad? pro's cons? What about quality? I would appreciate your opinions or experiences.. Thanks..

I used one from British Wiring for my Bugeye. Modern wires with the proper blue cloth wrap. Everything lined up and I was quite happy.

Check Dan Masters site, does he offer one? Advance Auto Wire.

New owner at British Wiring...other recent posts here said he was a stand-up guy...

If originality is important then you certainly want one wrapped in the blue vinyl tape. In fact.. even it originality is not important why not get what was on their to begin with. Looks so nice and very easy to trouble shoot & maintain when the wires match the diagram.

I think most problems with the original looms stem from poor maintenance of the connections and prior owner's doing patchwork fixes with old lamp cord, etc.

Now if you're lookling to convert to an alternator, add heated seats, mount aircraft landing lights on the fron bumper and upgrade the sound system to some major league amps then perhaps an alternate wiring loom is in order.

My only experience is with Moss (fine) but would think The Roadster Factory and British Wiring would also be good sources for the correct stuff.

Yes, Advance Auto Wire has wiring harnesses for all the TR's except the 7's & 8's.

His offering is a completly upgraded system that includes relays, more fuses, and higher ampacity wires. It's a lot more work to install one of his harnesses. It's definetly not plug and play. But, it is a huge improvement over the stock system. I'll be putting one in my TR3 resto.

I sent my 49 year old harness to Rhode Island Wiring and they repaired 6 wires and added 3 new wires where I specified, covered the whole harness with a new black woven cotton sheath just like it was originally for about half the price of a whole new harness.

Before sending it, I had removed the old black cotton covering. Doing this myself, they expained to me kept the labour costs down. AS per their requirement, I left all the other taped bits that keep it together when they re-do it. I got it back last week.

Re: Wiring Harness - choices [TR]

I have had good experiences the British Wiring. I bought a crimping tool, bullets and smaller harness (head lamp and signal lamps) to match a main harness. They have some of the smaller bits that the some of the big guys don't.

Good advice from the others. If you will be adding electrical accessories an upgraded harness would be in order. If you are doing concours restoration then originality would be your concern. If cost is major factor, I'm sure Don's suggestion would be a good solution since probably 75% of the wiring is fine in even badly damaged harnesses.

Nothing can ruin a pleasant drive like smoke from the dash board. A new harness made me feel more confident that there would not be a fire on my thighs. Apologies to The Spinal Tappets.

Re: Wiring Harness - choices [TR]

My TR6 wiring was a complete basket case. Put a new harness in from British Wiring and with the exception of one connector and two bulb holders it was a perfect match up.
Bought the crimping tool bullets and connectors and made the weakest part of my TR the strongest part. Put accessory
fog and driving lights using propper wiring colors and Lucas relays also purchased through them. (used Dan Masters suggested scematic diagram) British wiring was a pleasure to deal with. I had ordered and paid for two relays from them and they only shipped one, called them and they shipped another the same day no questions asked. Phil

Re: Wiring Harness - choices [TR]

I see that TRF is having a sale on wiring harnesses this weekend. I happen to have a gift certificate for TRF. Should I save my gift certificate and buy from one of the other companies listed? If not, anybody have the part number for a TR3A harness? I'm in the process of moving across town and have packed up my parts books.

Thanks

Re: Wiring Harness - choices [TR]

I know for a fact that the harnesses sold by TRF are made by British Wiring. If TRF is having a sale and it is cheaper than BR, then go with TRF.

The harnesses made by BR are of a very good quality and are quite original. I have one in my TR6. Not sure who the other vendors use to make theirs. Perhaps Moss would tell you. VB does not give out that info.
