Wire Harness Question

Yup, it's that island guy again, asking more stupid questions.

I am attempting to install a complete new wire harness in my 69TR. I cannot read a wire diagram nor do I have help available here. Nor am I able to use any of the electronic testing devices I have been told to purchase. The original color coded wires were long gone.

But I am an architect and therefore I can follow the colors on the diagram and look for the objects they end up at. (When I know what the object looks like!)

But I am stumped on a small item. Nothing in the dash board was functional when we bought the auto. I am taking apart and refurbishing all the dials and gauges. Many of them have holes in the back that I assume small light bulbs fit into. Some I can figure out, others I have not a clue.

So today's stupid questions from Tinster:

1. What is a "trafficator" and where do I find this object in the auto??

Thanks as always. I cannot begin to thank you kind folks enough. I could not accomplish this very difficult complete restoration without your input. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif

Tinster, you have my deepest sympathy. Since there never was an accurate diagram for a tr6, all the replacements are flawed in some way. I have done several and they will drive you to drink(Is that bad??)or worse. The one thing you have in your favor is the 69 was simpler than later years, so you may yet have hope. The trafficator is the green lense on the dash next to the red one that tells you when the ign is on .....or you stalled ect.

Trafficators were your first early style signal indicators on LBC's that rose from the side of a car, some below the windows some up above the windows at the post between the doors. These little flippers were also lit and remained swung up till the turn was made, then retracted back to the body tub. Your 6 would be more modern signal flasher light bulbs front and rear of the car.

HI Tinster,"what is a trafficator" The term Trafficator has been assigned to the Turnsignal activation switch. In most of the LBC's it is a somewhat complicated switch located in the center of the steering wheel. Others use a switch located as part of a stalk mounted on the side of the steering col.

A wiring diagram differs from a schematic in that the diagram shows the actual interconnections and routing of the wires, while a schematic is basically just a road map and is just as easy to read. While our streets and highways are virtually all black they are given names or numerals for you to follow. Contrastingly, on the schematic/diagram you will be provided with color codes of the wire routing to follow. Consequently, to simpify you installation I strongly suggest that you get a factory schematic and wiring diagram to guide you.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

These were also referred to as semaphores because of their flag like signaling function. Especially on German cars such as the old VW Type 1 sedans.

On the TR6, the turn signal indicator lamp in the speedometer is labeled trafficator. Simply, it's the turn signals.
