Hi Guys,
Ah the fun never stops. I like working on my Healey, I like working on my Healey. There, I almost convinced myself.
I used to say, she'll never see rain. Well that was till one day I was driving her and it started to rain. Wipers on, and then, wiper off. As in the passenger wiper arm flew off the car.
After inspecting everything, I figured I'd replace the wiper boxes and new arms. Both were old. I ordered both from Victoria British, for they are on sale. I replaced the wiper boxes with the new ones from BV. The reproductions have a coarser spline. Hope this is not a problem I thought. When the box and arm were on the bench I made sure they fit. Now that the new box is installed, what fun that was, I put the new arms on. Wouldn't you know, the arm is 1/2" too long. The blade moves off the windscreen and on to the frame. I measured the old arm, from the blade end, to the end of the top of the arm where the rivet hinge is. The old one, 9 1/2". The VB is 10".
I put the old arms on the new box, and they eventually spin and move till they are hitting the top of the car or fly off. What? I put the new ones on, and the same thing happens. There is a resistant tab in the base of the arm that pushes against the wiper box shaft. I pushed the arm on the shaft till it stops and it seems tight. Once the arm is straighted out and pressure is put on the arm from the arm spring, then the problems happens.
You know guys, replacing original stuff with after market is getting old. Now what do I do? Shim the old or new box? Try and find wiper arms that work with the new course thread spline? Is the course vs. fine even part of the problem? The diameter of the old and new shaft seem the same.
Anyone run across this?
