Winter Vehicle options

Recently I've realised that we need one more winter driveable vehicle. Now I've got awhile before winter comes around again....but I've been kinda brainstorming possible solutions. My oldest son will be going to university in the fall...and will most likely taking the Sonoma with him...so my wife will need something for tooling around town in the winter months:
What I've got so far:
1) Convince SWMBO to sell her MGA and buy a porsche boxster
2) Buy a MGB GT(with snow tires) and let my son take that instead of the truck.
3) Finish working on the TR6 and let him take that(with a hardtop and snow tires).
4) Buy a 90's Camaro/Firebird/Mustang and let either the son or wife have it for the winter....My only problem with this option is that I know older domestic cars are trouble...and I can't do much of the work myself, so it'll be another constant drain of funds.

I know a normal person would buy a "normal" ecno box...but I have trouble justifying the price of even a used Honda when I can have a nice MGB for the same price.

And just exactly is this crap we're having right now?? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
I think option 1 is out of the question. Boxters are no fun in the snow. Trust me on that one.
2&3 look like the best choices.
4 may be the most cost effective, as those cars are literally a dime a dozen.

hehehe....well I am hoping this is only a temporary set back....spring will be along shorty....riiiight?

I've heard good about boxster in the snow....and I figure it'll at least be on par with the other options...but I hate to sell an MGA(something thats climbing in value) for a porsche thats only gunna drop in value.

Buy a mid 90s Honda hatch or coupe. Keep it for as long as you want and then sell it for what it cost. The kids in this country pay big bucks for these cars. And if you want fun, find a 99 or 2000 Civic SIR (only in Can.) Very limited production, 160 hp out of the box, and appreciating fast.

boxters good in the snow?????? nah what he needs is an old v.w. cheap to buy, cheap on parts, easy to work on,cheap on fuel, and they go like heck in the snow, just put 40-50 pound bag of sand under the front lid,i had 3 in my youth through all kinds a bad weather always got me home safe, that way heck have "extree" bucks for the m.g /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif

I say a clapped out B that you can butcher up and modify into a winter-workhorse, that way you retain the best o both worlds. Jack it up like a "big-foot" with big ol' snow tires, put a plow/airdam on the front to break through snowbanks with, go out and enjoy the snow!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif

Winter vehicle?? I know a guy with one & when there's snow on the ground those hard, low profile tires just spin & spin & spin....oh, the car never moves!

yuk, no Hondas!...or VW's for that matter. Winter work horse MGB is sounding pretty good, but we'll see...I might just go back to driving the Jag in the winter, although it kills me to do it.
I see alot of Boxsters here in the winter with black rims and snow tires and a friend of mine with a 911 runs it in the winter like that without an problems. I am not really worried about deep snow driving anyway, I am in the city where the streets are cleared usually within a few hours of and snow fall. I simply hate to sell an MGA for a Boxster.

Well whatever you get, don't get an old CJ. I'm lucky I diden't lose my fingers to frostbite this winter..... Of course now summer's coming, and I get to have fun.
It'll tide me over till the TRs done.
My vote would be a late 80s early 90s BMW 3 series. or an older Benz sedan. touch of class, both are tanks when it comes to reliability.

Yup, I've already written Jeeps off my list for good after that last wagoneer I had. My wife won't drive an old BMW, and I am not much of a BMW guy anyway. The Sonoma is pretty much my sons....so unless I get something he's gunna wanna drive over it he'll continue driving it and this new car will be for my wife........I was actually thinking about a newish Mini now, can get 02's pretty cheap here too.

thats hilarious. I bet on the Volvo....

You can't beat an AWD Subaru hatchback with the right tyres for a good college, snow car. Lower than average MPG is the main drawback. College students need room to haul dirty laundry home. I know, trust me, my daughter is a freshman.
