Hi I have the badge shown in the pic fitted to my car. It is made by J Fray who make all BMC badges. My car has not been on the road since 1971 so not a recent addition...... but and I wondered if it was fitted to some cars from new. My car is 59 3000 so was not fitted to my car from new as Pat Moss had not won the rally at that point but would be interested to know what it's all about. Thanks

Very interesting. BCFer Steve Thomton ("HealeyPassion") has a piece in this month's "Healey Marque" (Austin-Healey Club of America monthly mag) about obtaining a replica of the badge that you have that was produced as a limited edition in 2008. Steve states, the badges were used on works rally cars after their 1960 Liege-Rome-Liege rally win. "It seems the factory commissioned a few of these badges for their rally cars following the win."

PS, the same issue of the Marque also has a great feature on Steve's stunning rally rep (Nice work, Reid).

Hi. Thanks for that. I have seem pics of the works cars with this badge on the boot lid. And by chance I also came across another one a few weeks ago from a guy who lives in Abingdon. He had a Rudd speed MK1 3000 that he sold in the 1970s but kept the badge and the Derrington Steering wheel so now have an original spare which is useful.

We have at least one 3000 MkI in Australia with this badge. I am not sure of its current whereabouts but it was in the AHOC of Queensland for several years.

Cooperman, that is super cool!! Hang on to that (or sell it to me:smile:)... I was so excited to get my hands on the beautiful replica that I can't even image getting one of the few originals. I'd noticed these in some of the old pictures but until a few months ago I hadn't seen any... original or replicas.

Thanks Rick for making me aware of this post. I've been heads down on a big project on my son's 1959 100/6 BN6.

Cheers,
Steve

Gentlemen, I am trying to research a Winners 1960 liege Rome liege badge that was uncovered in an estate in New Hampshire. The badge is in mint condition with "J. Fray Ltd. England" on the back. I want to correctly describe this piece and wonder if you can tell me if the reproductions would have the marking on the back from J. Fray Ltd.? I work for an auction house that is doing this estate. We have also uncovered a large number of NOS insignia for British Sports Cars which we will be selling at auction in October. I have to find the proper location to post the information on this forum. Any info about the badge would be appreciated.

UPDATE: I did locate one of these badges on ebay listed with a buy it now of $550, seller states it is an original. In looking at the photos, the back of the badge shows the same lettering but it is much more strongly struck than the lettering on the badge that I have. The word: Birmingham is much more pronounced on his badge leading me to think that the badge I have is probably one of the reproductions. We may list this item on ebay, if we do so I will let the Forum know. Thank you.

This shows where the Liege-Rome-Liege Winners badges were mounted on the works rally cars after Pat Moss's L-R-L win. The livery shown here is the version that was on Raul Aaltonen and Tony Ambrose's car which had an entry number of 3 in the 1964 Spa-Sofia-Liege rally. The car was registered as BMO 93B. It won 1st Overall and was the last Austin Healey to achieve a First Overall.

I sometimes put this livery on my car for shows. The signage was made up by a local shop for me.
