Windshield Sideposts/frame refinisihng

Frame was originally hard anodized. You can either strip it and redo (at cost), or strip it and paint/polish it.

Thanks Scott. I knew it was originally anodized but was wondering if anyone had any experience with a particular paint/silver color. I also thought I might clear coat it after I painted?

If it were mine, I'd strip then polish and clear coat it.

A 3M red scuffy pad with some light lube should cut the hard anaodize, or you can take it to a commercial metal polisher and they'll know what to do. You need to decide how "bright you want it". They can make it shine like chrome if you want that. Satin is more my speed.

Anadozing comes off with oven cleaner and water. Let it soak a bit. It will not hurt rubber or glass. Might want to have a scotch pad to rub just a bit with the water if it dries before you get to it.

Scott, I polished mine and did not coat it. A little Mothers on it every couple of months and it look like new. I get compliments all the time on it's finish.PJ

Polishing aluminum & then clear coating it will trapp moisture and it will oxidze. 'side lacquer does not like to stick to alumium very well. (i work with a lot of polished aluminum) I'd do what PJ did to his. A little polish here & there and it's good as new.

BTW: Nice look PJ.

These guys quoted 600 bucks for a complete polish and anadoxing of cockpit surounds, windsheld shell, and windsheld posts.

I did not do it, not yet in any case. Next time I restore/refresh Miss Agatha prob will.

He'll be redoing Miss Agatha until he's dead!

I don't know what is meant by properly, but I sanded off the old anodized finish (damaged) then polished the whole thing and had it cleaer powder coated. Looks midway between highly polished and satin but not dull grey like original. I believe you can have your pieces re-anodized as original if that's your goal.

There is a company across the street from me. He's a plater and when I talked to him about re-doing, he needs to have have the anodizing sanded off and the "grain" put back on as was done if I want it to match factory. Then he anodizes. Anodizing is just a hard coating that goes over the finish you put on and gives it a subtle haze. I've had many things anodized for work but not for myself yet.
